PROJECT DAYA: MONTHLY HOMELESS SEVA
Project Daya is BAYSG’s origin initiative, and it began in October 2019. It began as a simple delivery of peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, snacks and fruit to the Northern San Jose homeless community. The program has evolved to now offering comprehensive care packages including hygiene/personal care products, winter gear, and 1-2 meals with snacks, once a month. Our team gathers together in the morning to spend a few hours preparing the food, care packages and snacks, and is our time to engage with our peers.
Once we’ve prepared everything we load up our cars and take to the streets. We cycle through the main cities with high homeless populations in the bay (e.g. North San Jose, Fremont/Union City, Hayward, Oakland, etc.), going to a different one each month. Our volunteer team typically spends all afternoon/evening engaging with the homeless community – we check in on our regulars in each city to see how they’re doing, meet new people in the community and spend some time hearing their stories as we give out our care packages.
Project Daya is a volunteer funded initiative and is a BAYSG favorite because it allows our volunteer team to engage with the community on multiple levels and provides for an overall humbling experience that we get to share in together.
*This initiative is currently on hold due to COVID-19. We will resume again once we have identified safe methods to convene for food preparation and distribution.*
